"Before surgery I was not able to play with my granddaughter, now after having my total knee replacement I am able to take her to the park. It is wonderful."

ORTHOPAEDIC INSTITUTE
Carlos J. Lavernia M.D., Medical Director
Pieter J. Hommen M.D.
The Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital was recently established as a center of excellence at Mercy. The program will conduct basic and clinical science research and include hip, knee and joint replacement procedures utilizing the most cutting edge techniques available today. Carlos J. Lavernia, M.D., F.A.A.O.S., an internationally renowned orthopaedic surgeon and biomedical engineer has been named medical director of the Orthopaedic Institute at Mercy Hospital. "I am impressed with Mercy Hospital's commitment to clinical excellence and look forward to working with the Mercy team to develop and implement an internationally respected center of clinical excellence for orthopaedics," said Dr. Carlos Lavernia.
Mercy Hospital's surgical team recently showcased a new advanced technique for total knee replacement (TKR), during a live webcast of an actual surgery. Because of its minimally invasive nature this procedure's recovery time has been reduced to 50% of the recovery associated with a conventional knee replacement procedure. Cutting into the muscle is minimal, and there is less blood loss, pain and fewer complications.
The mini-incision TKR allows patients to substantially improve their quality of life by eliminating pain, regaining more mobility and improved range of motion. Patients are on their feet just hours after surgery and begin aggressive physical therapy the same day their procedure is completed.
