SAINT JOHN BOSCO CLINIC

The Story

Uninsured refugees fleeing economic and political turmoil from Cuba, the Caribbean Basin, and Latin America turn to st. John Bosco Clinic for free medical are.  Since its doors opened in 1992, the clinic has proved to be a haven for refuges in need of attention with no place else to turn.

Last year alone more than 10,500 adults and children from East Little Havana visited St. John Bosco Clinic.  Volunteer health providers and support staff, Mercy Hospital, and many foundations, individuals, and corporations in the community make this service possible.  Their continued commitment and dedication showcases the clinic's unique and compassionate care.

Diabetes is the most serious medical problem confronting patients in this demographic area, accounting for 60% of all visits.  This disease requires constant patient education, medication availability, and treatment.  If untreated, it can lead to other major medical problems, expensive treatment, and even disability.

The Need

Miami-Dade has the largest number of uninsured persons in the country; a number that is sure to increase as immigration to the South Florida area shows no sign of abatement.
